Per pyrodruivenzuur molecuul levert dit 4 NADH moleculen, 1 FADH2 molecuul en 1 ATP molecuul op. FAD is net als NAD een molecuul wat elektronen op kan nemen en af kan staan. Omdat er bij de glycolyse uit een glucose molecuul twee pyrodruivenzuur moleculen worden gevormd, is de totale opbrengst 8 NADH, 2 FADH2 en 2 ATP.. Glucose is in de meeste soorten organismen de belangrijkste bron van chemische energie. Bij de aerobe dissimilatie van glucose worden. De glycolyse kost 2 ATP, maar levert 4 ATP op. Netto komt dit dus uit op een totaal van 2 ATP. Daarnaast levert het ook nog eens 2 NADH op, die in de oxidatieve fosforylering ook nog eens 6 ATP opleveren.
